Formations and Attacking in My RTS
After box selection, I worked on moving selected units as a group and getting them to attack. That exposed spacing and collision problems.
From selection to a group command
Box selection gave me a way to control more than one unit. The next problem was making those units act like a group instead of sending all of them to the same point. I worked on formation positions so the units have space around each other while moving.
Adding attacks
I also added attacking. Once units can move together and engage a target, their spacing matters much more. Several units trying to occupy the same area can get in each other’s way.
What this revealed
Formations and attacks made the movement system useful, but obstacles were the next obvious limitation. A destination alone cannot tell a unit how to get around a wall. That led me to build a navigation grid and add A* pathfinding.
